The submission deadline was eight and a half months ago -- has a winner been named yet? I can't seem to find an announcement on Del Sol's web page.

I'm wondering what's happening with the contest too. It's not uncommon for judging to take longer than expected, but it's great when presses communicate with entrants about that so we kniow what's happening. Thanks!

Is anybody out there???

If I understand correctly, they were late in announcing a winner last year, and by October their first choice had inked a publishing deal with a different press, so they had to go with one of the runners-up. After that experience, you’d think they’d have realized the advantages of deciding quickly and locking in a contract to publish their favorite collection. It’s really quite strange that it is already December and they still haven’t announced.

I'm not so sure they're going to announce a winner.

As of January 4, 2011, Duotrope has Del Sol Press listed as being defunct: http://www.duotrope.com/market_3766.aspx.

If that's true, it'd nice to hear *something* from the editors, just as a courtesy, for all of us who paid them entry fees for a contest that seems to have disappears into the night. Really not the right way to do things!

I agree -- according to their own competition guidelines, they should have awarded the prize last summer and published the book in the fall: "A $1,200 Honorarium, paid in Summer 2010; book publication by Del Sol Press in fall 2010." This looks like a dead contest. If it drew the 400 submissions typical of such contests, then one wonders where the $7200 in reading fees ended up.

I'm not even sure who is running things now -- in her most recent bio notes, Katie Jean Shinkle no longer lists that she is an editor at Del Sol. Not a good sign...

I emailed her twice over the past several months, to ask about the status of the contest, but never got a response...

This is very disheartening.

P.S. When I contacted her, it was via an email address for her that was listed on the DSP website. I just noticed that it's no longer on the site...

Thanks for the update. If KJS is no longer involved, then I guess Michael Neff is the only one left. And Joel Brouwer, of course: I'm sure he'd know what was going on, and it's in his interest to clear things up, since he is now -- through no fault of his own -- associated with a contest that is looking more and more fraudulent.

Many competitions reserve the right not to award a prize, but I don't see that language on Del Sol's guidelines. If the press has gone bust, I don't know who would want to be published there, but they should at least hand out the cash prize to someone and announce any finalists and runners-up. I've seen similar contests receive around four hundred entries, in which case Del Sol would have taken $7,200 in entry fees. If the press is closing and they can't publish a book, that's bad, but pocketing the proceeds from this contest and walking away would be a whole different level of bad...

The winner was just announced here: http://delsolpress.org/dsp-poetryprizewinners.htm.

No list of finalists, nor a title, though from other websites it looks like the collection will be called "Adorable Airport" and will appear in 2011.

Better late than never.
